For me she is saying how AA treats emotional illness. I have suggested clearly in previous blogs how spiritual malady I think AA’s 12 recovery programme helps specifically with problems of emotion dysregulation.

I was amazed as this guy was reading his emotions, identifying verbalising/expressing them to me in a way I have never been able to do. I explained to him that his pride had been hurt, he was in shame and his “apparent” depression every since was simply prolonged self pity. One of my own difficulties is realising I am hungry or tired and I can often end up exhausted by over-doing stuff especially manual work around my house. My stop button broke a long time a ago and probably did not work very well to begin with. We seem to compulsively seek to relieve an inherent distress of not having what we set out to get. Our decision making seems fueled at times by this need to relieve distress rather than the intrinsic value of what we are seeking.
Addiction – It is More Than Physical Dependence
I am convinced in study and practice that this approach produces optimum results in the process of our health and wellness. Treatment in many settings has been limited to one or two aspects of our being—the following advocates for a wholeness approach in treatment. The difference in Alcoholics/Addicts, is an allergy to a chemical outside of themselves. Whereas the Al-anon may possess an allergy to the hormone released in their brain. The notion of an allergy spring difficulties with Al-anons, since we believe “if they recover… we recover”.
If we have been thorough about our personal inventory, we have written down a lot. We have begun to comprehend their futility and their fatality. We have commenced to see their terrible destructiveness. We have begun to learn tolerance, patience and good will toward all men, even our enemies, for we look on them as sick people. We have listed the people we have hurt by our conduct, and are willing to straighten out the past if we can. A business which takes no regular inventory usually goes broke.
Spiritual Malady vs. Depression
The “spiritual malady” of the Oxford group seems enhanced in me, I believe I sin more than normal people because of my emotional immaturity and reactivity. My “loss of control” over drinking is also linked to emotion processing difficulties as it prompted impulsive, uninhibited drinking. To conclude, it’s not my body — my allergic reaction to alcohol — that’s going to take me back to drinking.
Having taken the first eleven Steps, we are now at Step Twelve and are ready to carry the message to other addicts (pages ). Every time we work with another addict we are reminded just how bad it was when we first came into the program. In the newcomer, we recognize the same trembling hands, weight loss, and look of desperation and sheer terror that we had. We hear the unmanageability in terms of depression, misery, and unhappiness, whether openly expressed or feebly concealed. We are reminded of our own past troubles with personal relationships as we see newcomers struggle with theirs. Finally, our faith in God’s ability to restore us to sanity is reinforced, as we see God transform the life of a newcomer, right before our eyes.
What Do We Mean by Recovered?
But it started in a meeting somewhere and was repeated, and now it is very hard to find a meeting where it’s not done (although there are a few meetings that purposefully don’t use this greeting). Needless to say, it is not a requirement of the program to identify yourself as an alcoholic or even to use the term. But people commonly assume it is necessary because the fellowship repeats it.
Alcoholics Anonymous is a program for people who identify as having reached a point of internal unmanageability in their life as described below, which may mean that they drink a lot or a little. Throughout this piece, I will be using the term “alcoholic” to describe someone who self-identifies with this state of unmanageability, although I recognize this is not a chosen label for many — nor does it have to be. It is plain that a life which includes deep resentment leads only to futility and unhappiness.
Material Worship and the Spiritual Malady
While it may be true that none of us is “in charge” of such things, this type of practice doesn’t achieve anything other than extending the person’s sense of powerlessness. It is not helpful — and more importantly, it is not the intent of the first step to state that someone is powerless in every aspect of their life. The 12 steps are actually a method for reclaiming and owning one’s power, as I will explain further on. This misinterpretation has also, unfortunately, led to abusive practices within the fellowship, where elements of the “program” have been distorted and misrepresented to cause various forms of emotional abuse and harm. The best example of this is how members introduce themselves at meetings. I’m Bob, and I’m an alcoholic.” No one knows how this tradition started.
